Water is More Precious than Gold
All over the world, sources of pure water are becoming jeopardized in a variety of ways. In a valley in Chile 80 miles from Vallena, Barrick Gold is planning to mine through a glacier, permanently contaminating the water supply for 70,000 people. Here in Chicago water is wasted every day, and we purchase water from distant lands when our own Lake provides water that can be easily filtered. But rather than lament these sad facts, let's gather and celebrate the beauty and majesty of water and South American culture. We will eat, drink, watch performances and speeches, dance and make merry.
Saturday, August 12th, 7:30pm Yoga Now Gold Coast; 742 N. LaSalle
Water is More Precious than Gold
Our talented group of Chicago performers and speakers will dazzle you with dance, music, fire and water. We will discuss the energetic properties of water, getting clean water locally through safe filtration processes, and the situation in Chile and Argentina. There will be food and drinks donated by local Chicago businesses, art and jewelry for sale and silent auction, and a participatory water blessing ceremony. The event will be held in the glorious new Yoga Now Gold Coast Studio ( www.yoganowchicago.com) Chicago's first Green Yoga studio, with water donated by Dulcenea, Inc. ( www.dulcenea.us )
All proceeds benefit the "No to Pascua Lama" group in Chile; a group of citizens and farmers working to preserve their land and water from irrevocable damage:
Canadian-based Barrick Gold plans to soon launch a gold mine in a remote Chilean valley that will destroy regional water supplies and devastate local sustainable agricultural practices. The Pascua Lama mining project is 80 miles south-west of the Chilean city of Vallena, and involves mining a field of gold and silver in the high mountains between Chile and Argentina at an altitude of over 4,500 metres. The project will pollute pure glacial fed rivers, and destroy glaciers near and over the mine site. The proposed "Pascua Lama" mine will devastate community water rights and indigenous farmers - leading to the destruction of glaciers and contamination of a pure water source necessary for Chile's well-being.
Unlike a traditional protest or fundraiser, the focus of the night will be joy. We will learn more about how we can help, as we eat and drink and experience beautiful art. Please join us for this joyful, loving celebration of our most precious element - Water!
